  18. [1] MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  19.  
  20. This interactive will run on any computer meeting the following specifications:
  21.  
  22. Apple Macintosh 68040, 25MHz or PowerPC
  23. 8 MB of RAM (at least 5mb available for applications)
  24. Macintosh System 7.1 or later
  25. 640x480 display, in 256 colours*
  26. Double speed CD-ROM drive
  27. QuickTime system extension installed and enabled
  28.  
  29. Note: These are the minimum computer requirements to run this interactive
  30. successfully.  The specifications given are for optimally configured
  31. systems.
  32. Performance on individual systems may vary. For further assistance,
  33. including suggestions on how to optimise your system configuration, consult  section three of this document and/or the documentation that came with your system.

  35. *This CD-ROM will operate best in 256 colours.
  36. You may choose to run the interactive in thousands of colours - this
  37. requires more memory to be available.

  40. [2] GETTING STARTED
  41.  
  42. 1. When the "Whales" window opens, double-click on the "World of Whales" icon appropriate for the RAM on your system.
  43.  
  44.  
  45. [3] IMPROVING PERFORMANCE
  46.  
  47. The best response and video performance is available if your display is
  48. set to 640x480 resolution, in 256 colors.
  49.  
  50. Prior to using this CD-ROM, you should close all other applications,
  51. particularly those using large amounts of memory.  On some Macintosh
  52. systems, performance may be improved by disabling AppleTalk in the Chooser, and by disabling Virtual Memory in the Memory Control Panel. Enabling disk caching will also improve performance.

  54. Your Macintosh should have a minimum of five megabytes of RAM available
  55. after loading the system software, before you run any applications.  You can find this out by choosing "About This Macintosh" from the Apple menu.  Disabling or removing unnecessary system extensions will improve performance and memory usage.

  57. Performance will often be improved if you are running System 7.5, with the
  58. Apple Multimedia Tuner installed, which is provided as part of the QuickTime installation on the CD-ROM.  If possible, you should have the latest version of QuickTime installed on your system.  This interactive has been tested and found to be compatible with QuickTime 2.0. If you do not have a recent version of the QuickTime system extension, install it from the CD-ROM by opening the "QuickTime 2.0 for Mac" folder and copying the contents to your system folder. You will need to restart for QuickTime to be available to your system.

  60. [4] SOUND CONFIGURATION

  62. Ensure that the sound level of your system is set appropriately before
  63. starting the interactive.  You can adjust the sound output of your system
  64. by using the Sound control panel within the interactive. For more
  65. information, consult the documentation provided with your system.

  68. [5] QUICKTIME INSTALLATION
  69.  
  70. To display digital video and photographs in this interactive, you must
  71. have the QuickTime extension installed and enabled on your system. QuickTime is software provided by Apple to let your computer play movies. QuickTime for the Macintosh is provided as part of Macintosh System 7.0, and later versions.
  72. It is also available on the CD-ROM, in the "QuickTime for Mac" folder.

  74. This interactive will not operate properly without QuickTime installed.

  77. [6] TROUBLESHOOTING
  78.  
  79. Problem: Slow performance:
  80. Possible Solution: Set your screen colours and resolution to 640x480, 256
  81. colours. 
  82.  
  83. Problem: You have a Power PC with 8MB RAM and the interactive will not
  84. run: 
  85. Possible Solution: Drag the 'projector' for the interactive to your
  86. desktop then use Get Info to reduce the amount of memory the projector requires to run in. 
  87.  
  88. Problem: Printing from the interactive does not work:
  89. Possible Solution: Close the interactive and try printing from a
  90. word-processor or text editor. If that fails, check your printer settings and consult the documentation which came with your printer.
  91.  
  92. Problem: You experience difficulty viewing photographs or digital video on
  93. this CD-ROM.
  94. Possible Solutions: Make sure you have QuickTime installed on your system.
  95. Turn off Virtual memeory in the Macintosh Control Panels/memory settings, and restart you Macintosh
  96.  
  97. Problem: If you experience screen corruption or other unusual behaviour:
  98. Possible Solution: This may be the result of the activity of a program
  99. (such as a screen saver) left open in the background. Disable it or prevent it's activation before using this CD-ROM.
  100.  
  101. Problem: If you experience sound or video skips and/or hesitations:
  102. Possible Solution: This is normally a performance issue on your particular
  103. system.  Free up as much memory as you can and make sure you have shut
  104. down other applications.
  105.  
  106. Problem: If you find the display too dark:
  107. Possible Solution: Adjust the brightness and contrast of your monitor to
  108. suit. Sometimes changing to a lower display resolution can help.

  111. [7] USING THIS CD-ROM WITH OTHER OPERATING SYSTEMS
  112.  
  113. This CD-ROM is designed to run on an Apple Macintosh computer, using
  114. Macintosh System 7.1 or later; or on an Intel-based IBM-compatible system running Microsoft Windows. It should run without difficulty on the majority of personal computers meeting those requirements.  It is not guaranteed to operate correctly (or at all) on other operating system and hardware platform combinations.
